Google Dominates the Internet
Everyone knows Google is big. But the truth is that it’s huge. On an average day, Google accounts for about 25 percent of all consumer internet traffic running through North American ISPs. That’s a far larger slice of than previously thought, and it means that with so many consumer devices connecting to Google each day, it’s bigger than Facebook, Netflix, and Instagram combined. But that was before eBay’s latest earnings surprise, which sent its stock soaring and had analysts scrambling to raise their projections. “Can Internet companies ever turn around? The answer has been no,” Ken Sena, Internet analyst at Evercore, told me this week. “But now, there’s eBay. Google Changing Their Search Results from Sites To Answers
Google is taking the initial steps that will drastically change the web search playing field. They are putting the pieces in place so that search results they render for viewers will incorporate answers to their questions, rather than a list of sites where the viewer might be able to find the answer. We believe this is driven by the wildly successful Siri module included with the latest Apple iPhones – click here for more info. With Siri, the user can ask a question such as “what are the best hamburger restaurants close to me?”, and it will give them a list of the restaurants with directions to each. The user satisfaction with Siri is off the charts and Google has taken notice. There is a great blog post in the Harvard Business Review about this effort and what it will mean. Click here for that article.
You can be sure that Biz Tools One is on top of this trend. We are here to help you with the transition of your site and marketing to make the most of these changing trends. Google Announces Google+ for Business
Google announced last week that they had opened up Google+, their answer to Facebook, such that businesses could set up profiles. Previously, only individuals could create profiles. We are quite sure that Google will place significant emphasis on the Google+ presence of companies when weighing that company’s website and how it ranks within the search engine.
Here’s a site highlighting some of the major corporations and their presence on Google+ after only a few days: click here
Please give us a call if you need more information or help in setting up your Google+ account.
Scam Alert – Google Ranking Promises
We frequently receive inquiries from website owners regarding offers to get them ranked on the first page of Google. There are legitimate businesses that offer these services, but the majority of these solicitations are misleading. While they may get your website on the first page of search results for a particular phrase, is it a phrase that is frequently used by potential visitors?
There are often hundreds of terms that people type in to find a business, and some terms are more valuable than others (more frequently used to search = more visitors). There are only 2 ways to get on the first page of Google: 1) Google’s paid ads (the listings you see to the right and top of your search results), 2) placement within Google’s natural results. Paid ads can be useful but offer no long-term benefit. Ensuring placement within Google’s natural results is a long-term effort – Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – and is based on identifying and targeting key phrases.
Please call us at 910-630-1440 if you have any questions or would like us to help you in getting better visibility for your website.
Is Your Website’s Content Original and Updated?
At the end of February, Google began implementing a significant change in its ranking criteria regarding the quality of content on a website, which has negatively affected many websites. Websites containing pages that do not have enough content, duplicated content, or poorly written content have experienced a drop in Google rankings.
Biz Tools One can assist site owners by offering a variety of methods to add “fresh” content to a website, such as latest news, FAQs, calendar of events, blogs, featured clients, and RSS feeds that pull from industry-related news or a Facebook profile. We can also create random rotations of FAQs or tips, so site owners do not have to edit the site as frequently.
Website Address Registration and Search Engine Ranking
Each website address on the internet is essentially “rented” annually, with the rent being a small registration fee. Registration fees can be paid up to 10 years in advance. Google places some value on the length of a website’s registration – as spam sites come and go, a website address reserved for multiple years typically signals a higher-quality website.
Contact us if you would like to extend your website’s registration. In addition to the search engine ranking benefit, advanced registration eliminates the need to remember to register annually and slightly reduces the total registration costs.
Free Photo Editing Tool
Many businesses have the need to make simple changes to photos but do not need expensive and complicated graphic design software. Irfanview is a free tool that offers a wide range of image editing options. It is easy enough for beginners to quickly learn and also contains additional features for more advanced users. You can find it at: www.irfanview.com
Free and Easy Tool to Shorten Website Addresses
Google now has a quick tool to shorten web addresses. Go to http://goo.gl/ and 1) enter the website address, 2) press “Shorten” and 3) copy new web address from the right of the “Shorten” button. This tool is great for condensing very long web addresses you want send in emails that just don’t fit. It can also be used in blog posts, social network posts, and anywhere else you might need a condensed posting. Note: We used the shortener in the post below for our Google Maps page.
Online Reviews – “Show the Love”
Why not show some love to a favorite business? Customer Reviews are critical to a business’s online reputation, but most often they are only left by the unhappy – resulting in an inaccurate picture of a business. There is no better modern “thank you” than a positive online review.
Where is the best place to leave an online review?
Google Maps listing for the business (see Biz Tools One’s Google Maps listing, http://goo.gl/ZLbSj for an example).
On the listing for the business you want to review, 1) scroll down to the reviews section, 2) look for the “Been Here? …” link, 3) if necessary, create a Google account (quick and easy), 4) leave an honest review WITH SPECIFICS (NOT generic reviews like “they rock!”)
How to Simplify Too Many Email Addresses
This month’s time saver tip: Investigate webmail options to consolidate multiple email accounts and/or to check email from multiple devices. There are options that allow 2 or more accounts to be accessed with one log-in. If you need more portability, consider installing an app on your mobile phone that allows you to easily communicate from anywhere.
Need help? Biz Tools One can help you discover and implement your options – even directions on setting up your mobile devices if needed.
Scam Alert – Telephone Calls Regarding Online Directories
While there are many legitimate online directories, there are also scam artists using a variety of tactics that range from hijacking a legitimate directory listing to “verifying” your business info and then billing you for a listing in a low-quality directory. To avoid being “taken,” beware of any unsolicited calls attempting to update your business, including those claiming to be Google – request these callers send any information for directory updates/listings to your mailing address.
